John enlisted 4/5/1862, at Grenada, MS for three years of the war, in Captains Sam Young's Company, 30 Regiment Mississippi Volunteers.
He was sworn-in by Colonel Neil. The Company became Company G 30th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.
About 4/9/1865 this regiment was consolidated with the 24th, 29th and 34th and
formed a new regiment designated the 24th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.
